MARJORIE DELLA NOON “MAMMY” SLADE

  Marjorie Della Noon “Mammy” Slade, age 91, of Wakefield, died peacefully 
Friday, June 3, 2004, surrounded by her family, in the home of her daughter, 
Almeda S. Lanier. She was born in Johnstown, Pa. on December 13, 1913, the 
daughter of the late Fredick Leander Noon and Bertha Ellen Hammer Noon. At the 
time of her death, Mammy was the oldest living member of the Wakefield Baptist 
Church. She formerly attended Newville and Ivor Baptist churches. She was a 
homemaker and through personal study, became a practical home nurse. Mammy was 
proud to be part Cherokee and had a life-ling interest in Native American 
culture and supported Native American missions. 

She is survived by two daughters, Margarette Slade Harris of Petersburg, and 
Almeda Lanier and her husband, David of Wakefield; a son, Richard Thomas “Huck’ 
Slade of Wakefield; a sister, Emma Mae Reed; a brother, Bill Noon and his wife, 
Donna, both of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. 
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her grandson, David “Little Kelly” 
Lanier; four brothers, and a sister. 

A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., 
in the Wakefield Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. James H. Kerr. The family will 
receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Sunday evening from 6 
to 7:30 p.m., and at other times at the residence of Almeda Lanier. The family 
suggest that memorial donations be made to the Waverly Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 
583, Waverly, Va. 23890. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is handling 
arrangements.
