Friday, 13 Dec 1912 Volume 45, Number 49 George Shaffer Passes Away Through death Cambria county Saturday morning lost one of its oldest residents when George Shaffer, aged 99 years, 3 months and 27 days, died at the county home at 8:45 o'clock. Mr. Schaffer's (sic) death was caused by general debility due to his advanced age. He had been admitted to the county home from Mineral Point, May 31, 1909. He was known throughout Cambria county and was at one time one of the most successful farmers in that section. Mr. Shaffer was a remarkable man in many respects. Although almost a hundred years old he was possessed of all his faculties. He was able to go about the grounds at the county home. He seldom used glasses, his sight being remarkably strong. Up until last year his hearing was excellent, but it had been failing since the early part of the spring. Mr. Shaffer was born in Bedford County where he spent the early part of his life. He followed the occupation of farmer, locating on a farm in East Taylor township. Mr. Shaffer was the father of 16 children, the majority of whom have since died. He was twice married. Among the surviving children are: Robert, who resides in East Taylor township; Mrs. Annie Collins of Hornerstown; Mrs. Katharine Rager of Conemaugh; Mrs. David F. Burkhart of Jackson township and Mrs. George Horner of Altoona.
