OBITUARY

 James A. Shoemaker, a well-known and prominent citizen of Ebensburg, 
died at his home in this place on Tuesday evening at 8:45 o'clock, in 
the 60th year of his age.

Mr. Shoemaker was born in Ebensburg on the 8th of April, 1846, and 
was a son of the late Edward Shoemaker and wife, old time residents of 
Ebensburg.  His surviving brothers and sisters are Mrs. Ellen Murray, 
of Wyoming; Edward of Bellefonte; Mrs. Henrietta Wingard, of 
California; Francis A. Esq., of Ebensburg; Theodore of Kansas; Henry A. 
of Ebensburg; Samuel A. of Chicago; Mrs. Mary Augusta Rhodes, of 
Baltimore, widow of Captain Rhodes of the U. S. Army.

In early life, Mr. Shoemaker adopted the profession of a civil 
engineer and surveyor and later added contracting to his business.  He 
surveyed and located the Cresson & Irvona branch of the Cambria & 
Clearfield division of the P. R. R., and to this county, there are 
numerous buildings, bridges, etc., that are monuments to his energy and 
ability as a contractor.

About 1867 or 1868, Mr. Shoemaker was married in Ebensburg to Miss 
Mary, daughter of the late General Joseph McDonald, who survives him 
with five sons and three daughters, viz.: Mrs. Mame Davis of 
Coraopolis, Pa.; Edward of Nantyglo; Joseph of Vintondale; Dr. Walter, 
of Pitcairn; Dr. Donald; Mrs. Francis Evans, Alfred and Thecla, of 
Ebensburg.

His death was a shock to the community, coming after a short and 
sudden illness. Always an active man he was out a few miles north of 
Ebensburg surveying when he was seized with a chill and on Saturday 
morning was brought home.  Pneumonia developed and on Thursday evening, 
surrounded by his wife and entire family who had been sent for, he 
passed into the world to come.

The funeral services will be held in the Church of the Holy Name, 
Friday morning at 10 o'clock after which interment will be made in the 
church cemetery.
