Death of Former Resident

Dr. J. H. C. Shook, the well known Windber physician, died 
in the Memorial Hospital at Johnstown on Sunday morning 
from injuries received by being struck by a train at Lilly 
earlier in the day.

The exact manner in which Dr. Shook met his injures is a 
matter of doubt, but it is said that he was waiting for one 
train to pass when struck by another.  Railroad employees 
placed him on a passenger train and he was brought to the 
Memorial Hospital, but death occurred a short time after he 
had been brought to that institution.

Dr. Shook was in Johnstown last Saturday evening, according 
to all that can be learned of his whereabouts before taking 
a train up the mountain, and is said to have gone to Lilly 
to visit friends.  He was alone at the time of the 
accident.

The unfortunate physician, who was a son of Mr. Shook, for 
a number of years, proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel of 
Ebensburg, graduated with high honors to the medical 
profession and for several years was engaged in a lucrative 
practice in towns in Clearfield county. He located in 
Windber shortly after the formation of that town by the 
Wilmore Coal Company and had lived there ever since.  Some 
years ago he married a sister of Attorney John Hartman of 
Windber who survives him. They had no children. Dr. Shook 
was about 38 years of age.
