Friday, January 2, 1903 Charles N. Smither was struck by the "Goat" about two miles east of Cresson about 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning and so badly hurt that he died a short time after, at Cresson, where he was taken on the train that struck him. Smither had been riding on a freight train which stopped, when he got off, and failing to notice the approaching train, stepping in front of it. His remains were taken to the almshouse on Thursday and interred in the almshouse cemetery by the poor authorities.
