Friday, 6 Jan 1905 Volume XXXVIII, Number 52 Cuts His Own Throat Hastings, Jan. 4 After locking himself in the room occupied by him in the house of Marshall McKendrick, where he had boarded for the past six months, Peter Swamp committed suicide about 9:30 o'clock this morning by cutting this throat literally from ear to ear with a razor. He had been acting strangely of late and it is believed that his rash act was committed in a fit of violent insanity. The dead man came here from Houtzdale some six months ago, leaving his wife and three children from whom he had separated on account of domestic difficulties of long standing. Here, he obtained employment as a miner with the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke Company and engaged board and lodging with the McKendrick family. He is known to have had a good bank account and to have sent money regularly for the support of his family in Houtzdale.
