Friday, 27 Jan 1911 Volume 45, Number 4 J. H. Vanasdlen Dead J. Harvey Vanasdlen, proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel here, died of dropsy at his apartments in the hotel Wednesday morning, aged fifty-three years. The deceased became suddenly ill almost four months ago while out driving in the vicinity of Carrolltown with his family and Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Rostert Jr. of Johnstown. He was seized with hemorrhages of the stomach and from that on his health declined. Harvey Vanasdlen was born in Lancaster County, this State, in 1857 and came to Cambria County and settled in Johnstown some years before the Great Flood of 1889. He was employed at several hotels in Johnstown and later located at Wilmore where he was married about twenty years ago to Miss Emma Dopp of Summerhill Township. Some years later Mr. Vanasdlen went into the hotel business at Greensburg but returned to Cambria County after a few years' residence there. For four or five years the deceased conducted the Keystone Hotel, Cresson, coming to Ebensburg about two years ago to succeed the late William Kimball as proprietor of the Metropolitan. The deceased is survived by his wife, who is a niece of Mrs. Gustav Bostert Sr., and Mrs. Dorothy Keiper, both of Johnstown; a son, George Vanasdlen, aged about eighteen years; and a daughter, Dorothy Vanasdlen, a little over a year old. The funeral was held at the Metropolitan this afternoon with interment in Lloyd's Cemetery. In politics Mr. Vanasdlen was a Republican and was well known all over the county. Cambria Freeman Ebensburg, Pa. Friday, 3 Feb 1911 Volume 45, Number 5 Card of Thanks I desire to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the people of Ebensburg and vicinity who were so kind and helpful to me and my children during the recent illness and after the death of my husband, the late J. Harvey Van Asdlen. I am especially grateful for the flowers. [Signed] Mrs. Emma Van Asdlen
