Barney Vogel, a Cambria county "moonshiner," a term which is applied to distillers of illicit whisky, died at Dixmont Asylum last week. He was formerly a resident of Carrolltown, where he worked at his trade of stonemason, and afterward went into the "moonshine" business out in the woods near the small village of Nicktown, in Barr township. He was arrested and taken to Pittsburgh to await trial, but while in jail his mind, weak at the best, gave entirely away and he was sent to Dixmont. His lunacy was of a most violent kind up until recently, when strength failed him, and then came the end. The remains were taken to Carrolltown on Wednesday and interred in the burying-ground there. A wife and three children survive the poor "moonshiner," whose life closed amid the saddest surroundings, as there was no friend at his bedside, and not a glimmering of reason in the tired brain.
