At about twenty minutes past 12 o'clock Thursday morning, Mr. M. H. Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ward, died at his parents' home in Ebensburg, Cambria county, after a lingering illness of some weeks of consumption. The deceased was a brother-in-law of Mr. H. A. McPike, one of the editors and proprietors of the Altoona Times, and possessed a large circle of friends both in this city and his home who will regret to learn of his death. Mr. Ward was born in Hollidaysburg, January 7, 1854, and with his parents went to Wilmore in 1858. In this latter town he remained until 1872 when he went to Pittsburgh, where he entered Duff's Business college, and graduated in the same year. He then engaged in the grocery business in this city, having as his partner his brother, Mr. Al Ward, remaining in the business for some two years, when he entered the car record office, Pennsylvania railroad, then in Altoona, and remained thus engaged for a considerable length of time. In 1876 he went to New York, where he held a responsible position with the American Express and Merchants Dispatch companies, until last summer, when he was forced to resign on account of ill-health - a severe cold which he had taken fastening itself upon his lungs and terminating in consumption. While in New York he was under treatment of the best physicians in the city, but finding his case one beyond their help, he returned to his home in Ebensburg about ten weeks ago, where he died at the time stated above. He was a consistent member of the Catholic church. Besides his parents, Mr. Ward leaves three brothers and two sisters to mourn his death. These are Mrs. H. A. McPike, of Altoona; Mrs. P. A. Schwab, of Coatsville, Pa.; Rev. John Ward, of Pittsburgh; Al. Ward, late of New York city but now of Ebensburg, and Will J. Ward, of Ebensburg. Note: He is listed as Martin Ward, son of Martin and Bridget Ward, in the 1860 and 1870 Cambria county census.
