Wharton ALTOONA, March 13 – James A. Wharton, 87, Civil war veteran and for many years a prominent resident (Continued on Page two) of St. Augustine, Cambria county, died Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leroy T. Farabaugh of 128 East Twenty-fifth avenue following a stroke of apoplexy which he suffered Saturday. He was the father of 17 children, 11 of whom survive. Mr. Wharton was a veteran of Co. A, Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania volunteers and served four years in the Civil war. He was held in Andersonville prison for (illegible) months. Mr. Wharton held (illegible) in St. Augustine. He was twice married. His first wife, Mrs. Margaret McDermott Wharton, died in 1885. His second wife, Mrs. Mary R. Dodson Wharton, passed away at St. Augustine, October 4, 1914. He is survived by the following children by the first union: C. J. Wharton, Lorain, O.; Gertrude Wharton, Tyrone; Mrs. James A. McCoy, Turtle Creek; Marcellus Wharton, Clearfield township. The following children survive by the second union: Margaret Wharton, Altoona; Mrs. Leroy Farabaugh, at whose home he died; C. E. Wharton, Barnesboro, Cyrus Wharton, Clearfield township; Mrs. Earl Doyle, Ingleview, Col.; Thomas J. Wharton, Akron, O.; Mrs. Irvin Stoltz, Carrolltown; O. J. Wharton, Dysart; Mrs. Julian Burley, Bradley Junction, and Joseph Wharton, Akron, O. Funeral services probably will be conducted Monday morning in St. Augustine's Catholic church at St. Augustine.
