This community was in existence roughly from the 1830's to the 1890's and was comprised of approximately 15 homes owned by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The community residents were largely of Irish heritage. Some remained in the Northern Liberties (or Liberties) for only a short time before moving to Upper Mauch Chunk, Mauch Chunk, East Mauch Chunk, Summit Hill, Nesquehoning, Coalport and surrounding communities. Others remained in the Liberties for many years. These entries are from the period of 1875 - 1879 and 1889 - 1895. I will continue to add other years as I finish reviewing them. Each entry is preceded by a date that corresponds to the newspaper's publication date, not necessarily the date of the event. If specific dates were contained in the articles, they are included in the entry. All entries are paraphrases with the exception of those that are in quotations. Those in quotations are verbatim. The entries are from either the Mauch Chunk Coal Gazette or the Mauch Chunk Democrat. What these aren't: They are NOT a complete listing of newspaper articles, mentions, etc. for the families of the Northern Liberties. I'm sure, as I've scanned the newspapers, that I've missed more than a few. There may be some families who lived in the Liberties that I'm unaware and, therefore, didn't find any newspaper items for them. If you're aware of families from this community, either listed or not, please bring them to my attention. Thanks! Many thanks are due to Jack Sterling whose help and patience with my questions has been invaluable as I've sorted through these articles. And thanks, also, to the folks at Dimmick Library for their assistance in collecting materials about the Northern Liberties community. Questions or Comments?
