Dunlap was born at Huntington, Pennsylvania on May 16, 1838. He married Frances Louisa Gordon June 23, 1860 at Black Moshannon, Centre Co., Pennsylvania. There, they were married at the residence of and by Rev. Henry Wilson, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church at Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. Frances, the daughter of John Gordon and Ester Hoover, was born in Pennsylvania on September 11, 1847. Her father was a toll collector on the Black Moshannon Highway. April 26, 1861, George was recruited at Smith's Mill, Clearfield Co., mustering out on August 6, 1861 at Harrisburg, with Co. D of the 14th Pennsylvania Volunteers, in which he served for ninety days. He was drafted and mustered out August 27, 1863 at Mifflin Springs, serving under Capt. John C. Johnson in Co. K 149th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. While building a military breast works on the Welden Railroad in Virginia, George suffered a double hernia. He received an honorable discharge on June 24, 1865 at Elmira, New York. After the war, he returned to Centre Co., Pennsylvania where he remained for three years. In 1868 the Dunlaps took their four young children to Minnesota where they settled in Dundas, Rice Co. Between 1878 and 1879, they moved to Warren in Marshall Co., Minnesota. In 1885 or 1886, George went to Duluth, Minnesota, abandoning his family, and Frances believed he died on August 24, 1885. By 1887, William C. Konkel, town clerk of Wright Twp, near Warren, claimed he was married to Frances. William, Frances and her children moved near Minden, Nebraska to the home of her married son, James Elsworth. By 1888, William was captured, returned to Warren, sentenced and imprisoned for running off mortgaged chattles. During the 1890's, Frances and several of her children were in the rooming house business in Leadville, Colorado during its silver mining era. By 1902, she resided at Ridgefield, Washington. Between 1892 and 1899 George W. was living at Neihart, Montana, working as a lumberman in White Sulphur Springs for Sutherlin Bros. Publishing Co. He divorced Frances in 1894 at White Sulphur Springs, Montana. During a lumbering accident in December, 1894, George received an irreparable broken collar bone. Five years later he migrated to Republic, Washington where he worked as a baker until 1907 when he entered the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Veterans at Los Angeles, California. George Dunlap died of chronic nephritis in Los Angeles on February 12, 1908. He is buried in Grave 22, Row I, Section 13, in Los Angeles National Cemetery; 950 South Sepulveda Boulevard; Los Angeles, California 90049. Frances was married to Frank Henry Hill on October 3, 1910 at Salmon Creek, Clarke Co., Washington. He was born ca. 1865 in Limerick, Ireland, the son of James L. Hill and Mary Brown. A widower, Frank had been married to Mollie F. Baylor, who died January 11, 1905 at the age of 31 years. Buried at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Vancouver, Washington, Mollie was a native of Bantry Co., Ireland. A convert to Catholicism, Frances died in Vancouver on May 7, 1912 and was, also, buried in St. James Catholic Cemetery (no marker). Children of George W. Dunlap and Frances Louisa Gordon: 1.
