And I, Joshua Armstrong do solemnly swear, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the Rules and Articles of War. Sworn and subscribed to, at Bellefonte this 10 day of March 1864 Joshua Armstrong (Signed) I CERTIFY, ON HONOR, That I have carefully examined the above-named Volunteer, agreeably to the General regulations of the Army, and that, in my opinion, he is free from all bodily defects and mental infirmity, which would in any way disqualify him from performing the duties of a soldier. Armstrong previously to his enlistment, and that he was entirely sober when enlisted; that to the best of my judgment and belief, he is of lawful age; and that, in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able- bodied soldier, I have strictly observed the Regulations which govern the recruiting service. This soldier has Grey eyes, Black hair, Dark complexion, if five feet 6-1/2 inches high. Enlisted as of & to be credited to be credited to South Whitehall Twp. Lehigh County, 6th Congressional Dist. Weaver (signed) 148 Regiment of Penna Volunteers Capt., Recruiting Officer Additional Comments: According to his military record, Joshua was mustered into Company E, 184th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers on 12 May 1864 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was reported missing by his commanding officer as of 13 June 1864. On 24 June he was admitted to Emory Hospital in Washington D.C. having been transferred from the field near Petersburg, Virginia which was at the time under siege by the Union Army. Physicians notes at the hospital indicate that his condition was "much reduced in strength and great emaciation--loss of appetite" accompanied by severe diarrhea, which are all sypmptons of Typhoid Fever. His condition continually worsened and he died on 20 July 1864 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
