He grew up and lived there until he moved to Clearfield, where he met and married his wife of 68 years, Sue Louise Wilson, in 1936. During the war years, they lived in Philadelphia, where Frank worked as a Treasury agent investigating workers for the Philadelphia Naval Yard. In 1947, they moved back to Philipsburg and resided there for over 20 years when they moved to nearby Tyrone. He worked in the First National Bank most of the years while in Philipsburg and in the Blair County National Bank in Tyrone. Upon retirement in 1977, Frank and Louise moved to Arizona. Frank lived a quiet and gentle life. As a youth, he was an athlete and a scholar. He had an extraordinary memory and an exceptional knowledge of the language. He was an avid reader, reading a book nearly every day for over 25 years during his retirement. He enjoyed the puzzles in the newspaper and completed the New York Times crossword the day before he died. Frank was devoted to his wife, nurtured his family and lived a life of kindness to his friends and service to his community. He served on the board of the Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District for many years and served as its treasurer. He valued education and supported many local youth in its attainment. He had a keen sense of humor that was active even until his last hours. He always put others before himself, and if you were to open the dictionary to the word "gentleman," his picture would be there. He was the patriarch of his family, loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be sorely missed. Frank McCabe ascended into heaven as he lived, quietly and gently, on Friday, May 20, 2005, at his home in Gilbert, Arizona. He is survived by two sons, Jack and his wife Sandra Petika of Canonsburg and Michael of Gilbert, AZ; grandsons, Douglas and Andrew and spouses Alexa and Amy, all of Seattle, WA and grandson, John of Canonsburg. Frank had seven great-grandchildren. His wife, Louise, daughter-in-law, Cathy, both of Gilbert, AZ, and his brother, John, preceded him in death. A memorial service for the family will be held in Sedona, Arizona, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Frank's wish to honor his support of education was that contributions be made to the Cathy L. McCabe Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o the Chandler Education Foundation, 1525 W. Frye Road, Chandler, AZ 85225. Make checks payable to the Chandler Education Foundation.
