The deceased was born in Penn's Valley, Centre county. At an early age he embarked in business, and for several years was quite successful as an iron manufacturer, as well as in other manufacturing and commercial enterprises; but reverses swept away his large fortune, and at the time of his death he was comparatively poor. Perhaps no man in the Commonwealth had a larger circle of acquaintances or was more universally esteemed by his friends. At the time of his death General Potter was in the 54th year of his age.
