Born on July 7, 1924, in Tyrone, he was the son of the late Edwin and Gertrude (Beckwith) Rhoades, Sr. On May 3, 1947, he married the love of his life, Mary “Mame” Shay, who preceded him in death in 2002. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy on October 30, 1942 and received his honorable discharge on January1, 1946. He earned the rank of Seaman Second Class and was awarded the European- African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Service Medal, Asiatoio Pacific, 1 star, and Philippine Liberation, 2 stars for his military service. Ed was of the Methodist faith. He worked at Cerro Copper and Brass, retiring after 36 ½. He was always wanting to help others, especially his children and grandchildren. He do anything he could from installing water meters to home improvements for so many. No job was too large for Ed. All someone would need to ask, and he was there to give a helping hand. . He was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered and missed by all that knew him. Ed will be remembered by many for his harmonica playing skills, his love of pig roastings, and for baking pies. He was committed to his yearly Christmas portrayal of Santa for his family, especially for his grandchildren. Ed is survived by two sons: Robert “Lou” Rhoades and his wife, Zina, of State College and Jeffery Rhoades and his wife, Marissa, of Ransom, PA; three daughters: Shirley Walters and her husband, Don, of Milesburg, Gertrude Houser of Bellefonte, and Paula Rhoades of Milesburg with whom he resided until the Lord called him home. He is also survived by one sister, Blanch Weaver-Wilson of Loganton, several grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by one son, Edwin A. Rhoades, III who passed away in 2018. A celebration of life will be held in late spring or early summer of 2021 and will be announced. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kader-Neff Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 135 Main St. Howard.
