He resided in Centre county since 1854, and was first engaged in the lumber business. In 1859 he took charge of Philadelphia street car lines and was so successful that in 1860 he received a call to become the general superintendent of the Bellefonte and Snow Shoe railroad. He accepted the position and filled it with great credit until the road was sold, which was in March, 1887. In 1887 he was appointed by the governor, at the time of the death of Judge Smith, to serve out his unexpired term. He, during his term as associate judge, gave general satisfaction, and was often appealed to for advice by Judge A. O. Furst, who had the greatest respect for his sound judgment. Mr. Rhoades was married to Miss Mariah D. Smith, of Columbia, Pa., in 1861. He leaves to mourn their loss, a loving wife, a daughter, Rebecca, three unmarried sons, named respectively, Edward K., who is engaged in the coal business in Bellefonte; Joseph, a civil engineer in Altoona, and Francis S., of Philadelphia.
