Downing Date Of Photograph: 1863 Photo can be seen at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/chester/bios/downing-wh.jpg Image file size: 24.8 Kb William, who was a Miller by trade, was 20 when he enlisted in the 49th PA volunteers in 1862. He was killed in action on May 10, 1864, at the battle for the Spottsylvania, VA. Court House. The Pennsylvania archives index card describes him as 5' 6 1/2", light eyes, complexion, and hair. Letters written by him to his sister were recently found and are reprinted in the book, "Dear Sister", by the Uwchlan Township Historical Society. William joined the same regiment as his brother, Joseph B. Downing, and cousin, Benjamin H. Downing. These three were all direct descendants of Thomas Downing, namesake of Downingtown, PA.
