This was formerly the Charlestown Presbyterian Church cemetery, now known as Old Charlestown Burial Ground, the oldest cemetery in the township and surrounding area, with the oldest burial in 1746. Several Revolutionary War veterans are buried within. In 1930 there were 48 tombstones recorded which are on the list below. The Charlestown Presbyterian Church services, which had joined with Great Valley Presbyterian in the 1800s, ended soon after 1900 because the Phoenixville Presbyterian Church, built in 1849, attracted many members away from Charlestown. The old church and ground on which it was built was purchased in 1942 from the Great Valley Presbyterian church, by Frank B Foster of Charlestown, who constructed the Charlestown Playhouse on the old churchsite. This playhouse was used as a nursery school, and administered by his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Stonerov. The cemetery is across the Charlestown Road from the present Playhouse site. He enlisted as a surgeon in the 4th Bttn on 2/4/1776 and was promoted to Senior Surgeon, General Hospital of the Middle Department on 11/1/1777. He was in command of the hospital services for the entire area during the Valley Forge encampment. He owned some property in Chester Springs which he donated to the Army for use as a hospital. Much of his time during the encampment was spent there in supervision. He died 6/17/1778 of a contagious disease contracted in his labors in the hospitals. Sometime after his burial in Charlestown, the present stone wall that surrounds the cemetery was built from funds from his estate.
