(illegible) Wersler Prothonotary February 14, 1935 Charles Cooper -S .400853 BA (illegible) AWF Mr. Willis S. Gibson # 30 N. LaSalle St., R 1325 Chicago, Illinois Dear Sir: Reference is made to your letter in which you request information relative to the following Revolutionary War soldiers: Ezra and Joshua Hoopes both of Chester Co., Pa and Charles Cooper pensioned under the Act of 1818 while residing in Chester Co., Pa. The Revolutionary War records of this office fail to afford any data relative to a claim for a pension having been filed on account of the services of either Ezra or Joshua Hoopes, surname searched under similar spellings. As a possible means of securing information in regard to the military service of these soldiers, it is suggested that you address the Adjunct General, War Department, Washington DC. The date and place of birth for Charles Cooper, were not obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, nor are the names of his parents given. He enlisted in January, 1777, served in Captain Sculls company in the Pennsylvania Line, and in Captain John Davis’ company, and Colonel Harmar’s 1st Pennsylvania Regiment, from which he was discharged, August 15th, 1783. The soldier, Charles Cooper, was allowed a pension on his application executed August 5th 1818, then stating he was 76 years of age and living in Newtown Township, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania. He gave his age in 1820, sixty years and at that time residing in Easton Township, Chester Co., Pa. There is no explanation for this discrepancy in his age. His family residing with him in 1820 consisted of his wife Margaret, and a son aged 16 years. The name of this son is not shown, nor is the age of his wife given. There are no other family data. In order to obtain the last date of last payment of pension, the name and address to whom paid, and possible the date of death of the pensioner, you should address the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, Washington, DC., citing the following data: Charles Cooper Certificate 9499 Issued April 21, 1819 Rate $ 8.00 per month To commence August 5, 1818 Act of March 18, 1818 Pennsylvania Agency Very Truly Yours A.
