All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Diana Quinones audianaq@msn.com March 6, 2006, 10:08 pm 1812 Pension File From Pension file of John Buzzard: WC 13591 Affadavit: On this 28th day of November 1850, before me as Justice of the Peace within and for the county of Montgomery, state of Pennsylvania personally appeared John Buzzard, aged 58 years, a resident of Upper Providence Township, in the county and state aforesaid, who duely being sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical John BUZZARD in the Volunteer Regiment of Infantry of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, by Colonel Beech in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812, that he volunteered at Upper Providence township, aforesaid, in the county and state aforesaid, on or about the 18th day of September 1814, for the term of 3 months and continued in actual service for the term of 3 months, and was honorably discharged in the city of Philadelphia in the state aforesaid on or about the 18th day of December 1814, as will appear from the muster rolls of said company, he having never received a written discharge. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which he may be entitled under the Act granting Bounty Land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States passed September 22, 1850. signed: John Buzzard Sworn and subscribed before me this day and year first above written. and I hereby certify that I believe the said John Buzzard to be the identical man who served aforesaid and that he is of the age above stated. Thos M Potts, JP Letter to L P Waldo, Esq., Commissioner of Pensions 6/6/1855: Dear Sir, I send you herewith, the application of John Buzzard, a soldier of the War of 1812, for Bounty Land under the act of March 3, 1855 - with bounty land warrant No 19767 for 40 acres issued to John Buzzard annexed. Please send Mr Buzzard's warrant when issued, to my address. Very respectfully yours, Wm Rossiter Norristown PA (The attached bounty certificate was #19767 for 40 acres, issued on 9/27/1851.) On 3/22/1855, this bounty land declaration was filed by John Buzzard: State of Pennsylvania, County of Montgomery On this 22 day of March 1855 personally appeared before me, a justice of the peace, within and for the county and state aforesaid, John BUZZARD, aged 62 years, resident of Upper Providence in the county of Montgomery, in the state of Pennsylvania, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical John BUZZARD who was a private in the company commanded by Captain George Schwenk in the regiment of PA volunteers, commanded by Colonel Bache in the war with Great Britain declared by the US on 6/18/1812, for the term of 3 months, and continued in actual service in said war for 14 days and upward; that he has heretofore made application for bounty land under the Act of 9/28/1850, and received a warrant, No 19767, for 40 acres, which he now returns hereto annexed. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act appproved 3/3/1855. He also declares that he has never applied for nor received under this or any other act of Congress, any bounty land warrant except the one abve mentioned. signed - John BUZZARD We, John COATS and Francis LYLE, residents of Upper Merion and Bridgeport in the county of Montgomery, state of PA, upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declaration was signed and acknowledged by John Buzzard in our presence, and that we believe, from the appearance and statements of the applicant that he is the identical person he represents himself to be. signed: John Coats and F Lyle. declaration and affadavit were sworn before me on the day and year written...Tho W Potts, JP Note: across the bounty certificate #19767 was handwritten 'cancelled 2/25/1856.' So it appears John BUZZARD never received his 40 acres, having returned the bounty certificate. Here is proof of his War of 1812 service: CAMP DUPONT, November 26, 1814. Muster-roll, of Capt. Schwenk's company, in the Second regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer light infantry, in the service of the State of Pennsylvania for three months, from the 12th day of September last. Attached to the First brigade. Second division, Pennsylvania militia, under command of Brig. Gen. Samuel Smith, November 29, 1814. and (NOTE: PA Archives Series 6 > Volume VII > Body > Muster Pay and Receipt Rolls - 1812-14. p126 shows that John BUZZARD, Private, was on the muster roll under Capt. George Schwenk in the 2nd Regt, PA Vol Light Infantry in service for 3 months from 9/12/1814 attached to the First Brigade, Second Division, under command of Brig Gen'l Samuel Smith, 11/29/1814.) Additional Comments: John BUZZARD died 6/12/1856 in Port Providence. He was a lock tender at Mont Clare Lock #60 in the 1850 Census. His son, Theodore BUZZARD, was lock tender there in 1860 Census. John Buzzard married Hannah SAVAGE of E Coventry, Chester County, PA on 1/17/1817 in Reading by Rev. Henry Muhlenberg. After his death, Hannah applied for a widow's pension.
