They were made in Philadelphia, and as the members of the Band are not all perfect n their use, they have engaged Prof. Bailey, of Philadelphia to give them instructions. They are still a little in debt in purchasing the instruments, but the members ask us to return their thanks to the different citizens who were kind enough to five them assistance. Daily Local News, March 30, 1877 Resigned- Last evening at a meeting of the Liberty Cornet Band of our borough, Mr. James Spence tendered his resignation as leader of the same. The resignation was accepted and James A. Biddle was chosen to the vacancy and Ephriam Govens was at the same time elected Captain. Mr. Spence has been leader of this band since its organization covering a period of nine years, and retires with laurels. His resignation has bee influenced though a pressure of business upon his time. Daily Local News, August 1, 1878 The Liberty Cornet Band- according to programme (sic) the boys of the liberty Cornet Band assembled at Spence Bros. Saloon last evening, and partook of cake and ice cream at the invitation of Mr. Wm. W. Jefferis. The supply was a bountiful one, and both before and after the repast they performed a number of their choicest selections in their very best style. Daily Local News, June 2, 1890 The Liberty Cornet Band On Sunday afternoon the Liberty Cornet Band observed Memorial Day with appropriate ceremonies. At two o’clock the band, with a number of ex-members, marched to Chestnut Grove Cemetery. A grand chorus, “Nearer My God to Thee”, was sung; prayer was offered by Wm Williams; Anthony Y. Wilson spoke in memory of the deceased member, Harvey T. London, and John S. Prigg spoke in memory of the founder of the organization, James Smith. Thomas Denny spoke in memory of the deceased member and leader, Wm. H. Thomas; Abram Smith spoke of James A. Biddle, on of the leaders, and David Luff spoke of Alonzo Y. Smith, also a deceased member. After a short address by Wm Williams, a dirge was played by the band as the conclusion of the exercises. Daily Local News, January 2, 1891 Band Election Last evening, at their room, the Liberty Cornet Band held their annual election, with the following results: Leader, Charles H. Burns; President, Joseph T. Melton; vice president, Harry Steen; Secretary, Townsend Price; Corresponding Secretary, Wilson Luff; Treasurer, Henry Cummings; Directors, Anthony Y. Wilson and John Gladman. The band is in a flourishing condition, though it has lost four members by death during the past year, and the retiring leader, Isaiah Warnick, is now laying very low with consumption. The organization is well equipped with uniforms and instruments. Daily Local News, January 2, 1892 Would Not Drink - The Liberty Cornet Band serenaded the Chief Burgess, James Spence, E.O. Taylor and many other persons yesterday and rendered very creditable music. They were invited into the Farmers’ Hotel and other places to drink, but Leader Luff said “No” and that settled it.
