This company has been in nearly all the battles of the Army of the Potomac, and have shared largely of its trials and reverses. [CW] May 24, 1864 VILLAGE RECORD History GEO. << MERCER>> - We stated in the last Record that GEO. A. << MERCER>> , of this Borough, was wounded in the hand. May 30, 1863 VILLAGE RECORD History GETTING BETTER. - Richard << Mercer>> , of the 124th Regiment, who was wounded at the battle of Chancellorville, was brought to his home in East Bradford, by his father, Caleb << Mercer>> , last week. He is improving slowly, and his physician thinks he will entirely recover. The ball entered his cheek, on the right side, near the mouth, and came out the back of his neck, on the left side - making a very dangerous wound. Had the ball went a little different from its course, it would have severed the main artery of the neck, and he no doubt would have bled to death, as he lay on the battle field nearly a whole day, before any assistance could get to him. From the battle field, he was taken to the Hospital at Washington, where remained, and where he was very kindly treated, until Tuesday week, when his father brought him home. [CW] June 6, 1863 VILLAGE RECORD History IMPROVING - RICHARD << MERCER>> , East Bradford, who was so severely wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville, an account of which we published last week, visited the RECORD office this week, looking remarkably well considering the severe suffering he has gone through. The first nine days after he was wounded, he was not able to eat a particle of food. Dr. BRINTON, under whose care he has been since his return, thinks it was one of the most miraculous escapes that ever came under his care. Mr. << MERCER>> is full of patriotism, and in very fine spirits. [CW] February 9, 1863 VILLAGE RECORD Death Notice DEATH OF A VENERABLE COUPLE - We record today, the decease of CALEB << MERCER>> and his wife ANN, in the Borough of Kennett Square, Chester county. He was in the 79th year of his age, and she in her 76th. They died within forty eight hours of each other - and were buried at the same time - On Wednesday last - having made the journey of life together, for more than half a century. They were married in April, 1811. They were pleasant and loving in their lives and in death they were not divided. September 27, 1862 VILLAGE RECORD Accident TERRIBLE AND FATAL RAIL ROAD ACCIDENT - A shocking accident occurred on the Pennsylvania rail road, near Coatesville, Chester county, on Thursday evening last. As the train from the West, having on board nearly a thousand of the militia, was passing under a bridge, three persons were struck on the neck or the head and almost instantly killed. They were standing on the top of the cars, with their backs to the bridge. Their names were << Mercer>> , son of Wm. << Mercer>> , West Chester; Casper Stevenson, son of Richard Stevenson, of the same place, and Elwood Taylor, son of David Taylor, of Westtown, Chester county. They were fine young men, and had been out with the militia. Stevenson lived a short time after the accident. Their bodies were all brought to West Chester. It was a sad and fearful calamity, by which three patriot young men were lost to their friends and the community. It is sad to think that men WILL stand on the top of cars while in motion - despite the danger. [CW] September 30, 1862 VILLAGE RECORD Memorial DEATH OF TAYLOR, STEVENSON AND << MERCER>> . At a meeting of the members of Company A. 10th Regt., P.M. held in the Borough of West Chester, on the 26th of September, 1862....The chair announced the business of the meeting, was to take some action concerning the unfortunate accident, whereby three members of the said company lost their lives by coming in contact with a bridge on the Pennsylvania railroad, on their return home, on Thursday evening last. ...Whereas the Lord in his wisdom has seen fit to remove from amongst us Alfred E. Taylor, Caspar Stevenson and John << Mercer>> , members of this company, by a sudden death last Thursday evening, therefore, RESOLVED, That we sincerely regret the loss that we have sustained by the sad accident which terminated the lives of our fellow members, who with an ardent patriotism and unselfish devotion hastened at the Governorcall to lend in their aid, in resisting the threatened invasion of Pennsylvania, and performed all their duties as citizen soldiers, with zeal, earnestness and ability...
