MCCARDELL, of West Chester, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Granville McCardell, of Downingtown, arrived home last Friday to spend a fifteen-day furlough from Camp Livingston, La., where he is stationed in the Medical Detachment. Upon his return to camp, he will enter an Officers’ Training Camp in the South. Private McCardell has two brothers, Granville C., of the Message Center at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, and Robert L., who is doing police patrol work in the Hawaiian Islands, also serving in our armed forces. A dinner was given on Sunday by his parents in his honor and he will be entertained this Saturday at the Mansion House by his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel SELDOMRIDGE, of West Market street. Technical Sergeant Harold PENNINGTON, former secretary to the Judges of Chester County, now in the field in the Carolina maneuver area, writes the following reminder to the folks at home: “The morale and the spirit of the soldier in the field cannot be better maintained than by his receiving letters from home and friends. Overseas or on maneuvers, a soldier’s only contact with home and loved ones is by mail. When a fellow’s ‘down-in-the-dumps,’ there’s one sure cure – and that’s a real newsy letter from home. So, come on, homefolks, help chase his blue with the hometown news!” Sgt. Pennington’s address is: 104th Q.M.B.N., A.P.O. 29, Dilworth, North Carolina. Private Barclay RUBICAM, son of Jacob Rubicam, West Chester, R.D. 6, and local artist of note, has turned his talents from the palette to the gun, according to recent reports from Camp Wheeler, Ga., where he is stationed. He won the army’s sharpshooter medal for outstanding rifle marksmanship by scoring 171 out of a possible 200 points. First Class Private C. Earle JOHNSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Johnson, 2 East Mercer avenue, Llanerch, is home on a ten-day furlough. He is stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., in the 37th Evacuation Hospital Corps. Ensign Samuel S. HOLLINGSWORTH, son of Dr. and Mrs. I. P. P. Hollingsworth, 411 North Walnut street, left last night on an assignment, after spending a short furlough with his parents. Sergeant Michael J. DOYLE, of West Grove, is now enrolled in the air forces officer candidate school at Miami Beach, Florida. After a twelve weeks’ course of instruction in administrative, personnel and supply duties, he will be commissioned a second lieutenant. Private Norman E. KENT, whose wife, Margaret, makes her home at 8 Prospect avenue, West Grove, won the army’s sharpshooter medal for outstanding rifle marksmanship at Camp Wheeler, Ga. He scored 168 points out of a possible 200. He is now serving with Company D, 11th Training Battalion.Word has been received from Private Horace E. BROWN, 315 West Miner street, that he is located at Camp Forrest, Tenn. His work will be in connection with the Quartermaster Corps. His address is Hq. and Hq. Co., 405th Q.M. Bn., Camp Forrest, Tenn., A.P.O. 80. Private Alfred C. HAYDEN, son of Mrs. Anna B. Hayden, who is stationed at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Ga., expects to be transferred sometime in August. Harold G. HUNSBERGER, of Boyertown, formerly of West Chester, and Clarence Harrison RENOLL, of Pottstown, a Chester County school teacher, were among a group of eight volunteers who left Pottstown this morning for Fort Meade, Md., for assignment to basic Army training centers. The eight men, sent by the Pottstown draft board, will seek commissions as Second Lieutenants upon completion of their basic training and courses in officers’ schools. Mr. Hunsberger is a graduate of West Chester State Teachers College, Class of 1931, and until recently was employed as a bookkeeper in the college business office. Mr. Renoll was principal of the West Whiteland Consolidated School, near Exton, last year. Sergeant William J. PETERSON, of Pine Camp, N.Y., spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Peterson, of Valley road, Malvern. Private John A. MORRISON, son of Mrs. Bertha A. Morrison BITLER, 600 West Nields street, has recently been transferred from Camp Berry, Nashville, Tenn., to Crookston, Minn., where he is a student at the University of Minnesota.
