Col. James B. PATTON (photo), of Paoli, former commandant of the Aviation Detachment at Scott Field, Illinois, has been appointed post executive, replacing Lieut. Col. Charles F. CARTER, who has been transferred elsewhere. Several other officers have been shifted to new duties at this parent radio school of the Air Forces’ Technical Training Command, Col. Wolcott P. HAYES, commanding officer, announced. Col. Patton’s military career began in July 1918, when he enlisted as a private. While at officer’s candidate school, at Camp Lee, Va., the armistice was signed, but in 1923 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the reserves. As a member of the Pennsylvania National guard, since 1927, he was advanced to first lieutenant, and then to captain. He served as captain of Company I, here. In September, 1936, he resigned from the National Guard and returned to the Officer’s Reserve Corps. He was called to active duty in 1941, and served as squadron commander and exchange officer at Jefferson Barracks, where he was promoted to major in June, 1941. Promotion to lieutenant colonel was on February 1. Charles S. TAYLOR, Jr., 232 Price street, has enlisted in the Coast Guard and will leave in a few days for training. Captain John J. FORD, who was recently married and left last week by plane for his post at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, writes that he has arrived safely and finds the work most interesting. He reports that the fort is approximately three times the size of West Chester and the hospital is finely equipped and efficiently operated. In his depot there, the purpose of which is to establish the base hospitals, there are 350 men, two dentists, two veterinarians and five regular line officers besides himself. “The food,” he says, “is excellent”. He also told in a letter to his mother, Mrs. Rose Ford, of 520 South Walnut street, of his first ride in a jeep, which he enjoyed immensely. His address is: Captain John J. Ford, 6th Medical Supply Depot, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. At present Captain and Mrs. Ford are living at the Plaza Hotel, at San Antonio. David James RIGGINS, son of William P. Riggins, of Frazer, leaves today from Phoenixville for New Cumberland, he having been inducted into the army. He has been working with the Esco Cabinet Company, in West Chester. Richard RHOADS, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Rhoads, former residents of South Walnut Street, this borough, and more recently living on their own property, in East Bradford township, near Sconnelltown, about two weeks ago enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and yesterday left here for the Naval Base at Newport, Rhode Island, where he will receive his basic training. The embryo sailor was tendered a merry send-off, in the nature of a farewell party, at the home of his parents the other night. Delicious refreshments were served. Rhoads, who is nineteen years of age, has for sometime past been in the employ of the Eachus Dairies, this borough. Those present at the farewell party were: Millie REYNOLDS, Janet TOUCHTON, Bonnie KING, Janice KING, Ruth DICKENS, Betty BALDWIN, Helen WALTON, Thresa CARR, Suzanne CLEVER, Jane RULON, Bud HERSHEY, Bill BALDWIN, James LOCKMAN, William BANNER, Robert GRUBB, Lawrence HARRY, Howard JONES, Paul TOUCHTON, Steve RULON, Bernard HUTCHINSON, Richard RHOADS, Mrs. Harold RULON, Wesley C.
