MITCHELL, son of Mrs. Emma SAVILLE, of Thorndale, has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He is now at one of the training bases for his basic instruction in the art of war as waged by this hard-fighting attack group. (photo) Second Lieut. John C. DIJOSEPH received his commission in the Army of the United States recently as a graduate of the Officer’s Candidate Department of Eastern Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius DiJoseph, of Toughkenamon. William E. PHILLIPS of “The Meeting House”, Birmingham, has received the commission of Lieutenant (J.G.) in the Naval Reserves and leaves for Dartmouth, Hanover, N.H., November 23, for a period of indoctrination. Mr. Phillips, a graduate of Pennsylvania State College, has been sales manager for Styer’s Nurseries at Concordville for the past five years. He is chairman of the Birmingham Township Defense Council and a Past Exalted Ruler of the West Chester Lodge of Elks. Mrs. Phillips and their two children will remain at their home in Birmingham for the present. Private Nolan MONTNEY, of West Chester, has been promoted to the rank of Technician Fifth Grade at Camp Davis, N.C., where he is now stationed. He entered the United States Army May 12, 1942. Private Robert GUSS, of the United States Marine Corps, has been promoted to private first class, it was announced by his commanding officer, Major G. P. Groves, at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where he is stationed. Guss, the son of Henry Guss, 315 South Walnut street, enlisted in the Marines last January. He received recruit training at San Diego, Calif., and has been in Dutch Harbor for the last several months. Lieutenant Andrew J. LOTZ and Mrs. Lotz, formerly of Paoli, now of Augusta, Ga., had as their guest on Sunday Lieutenant Horace DARLINGTON, of West Chester. The men, who comprised the anesthesia staff at the Homeopathic Hospital and also served on the Medical Staff, were surprised and pleased that they should both be stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga. Mrs. Lotz and her son, Carl, are residing at 2628 Henry Street, Augusta, Ga., where she expects to remain until Lieutenant Lotz is transferred. She writes that they are receiving the “Daily Local News” from a neighbor, Mrs. Harry PRITCHARD, and that the news is greatly appreciated. Private Charles J. FARR, who is stationed at Baltimore, Md., spent a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Farr, and family, of Malvern. Douglas H. CAMPBELL, of West Chester, has been graduated from the Officer Candidate Course at the Quartermaster School at Camp Lee, Va., and has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army of the United States. He has been assigned to active duty immediately. The first communication in eight weeks has been received from Private Wilmer K. GOTTIER, of 132 East Washington street, stating that he has arrived safely with a troop of U.S. Marines at an unknown destination. His new address is U.S. Marine Corps, Unit No. 405, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, Calif. Corporal Robert PANNEBAKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Pannebaker, Chester Springs, has graduated from the Wheeled Vehicle Department of the Armored Force School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and received his diploma as a qualified automotive mechanic. Private William H. SCHEIBE, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Scheibe, West Chester, R.D. 1, has been assigned to the Armored Force Replacement Training Center at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for basic training which will qualify him for duty with the Armored Force. John Murray WHITFIELD, III, of East Goshen township, has been promoted from Corporal to Technical Sergeant. He is attached to Headquarters Troop, 104th Cavalry. Private John F. PRYOR, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon Pryor, 322 West Miner street, has arrived at Camp Croft, S.C., one of the army’s four Infantry Replacement Training Centers. He has been assigned to Company B, 38th Battalion, to receive his basic training. Later he will receive additional specialist training.
