Strode, of West Grove, arrived in West chester at noon today with a young man named Alfred B. Speakman, of Chatham, who is held on the charge of larceny of money. Young Speakman is the Son of Mrs. E. Melvina Speakman, who owns a large farm near Chatham. During the past year, her son has exhibited a tendency of stealing money, and on numerous occasions he made away with considerable sums belonging to his mother. His latest steal a day or two ago, upon learning of whioch his mother went before Squire Lipp, of Avondale, yesterday and swore out a warrant for the arrest of her wayward son. JUMPED OUT THE SECOND STORY WINDOW. The warrant was placed in Constable Strode'` hands, and latter visited his home at a late hour last night. he dound young Speakman slumbering soundly and , rousing himup, bade him to attire himself preparatory to going to prison. The lad rubbed his eyes and in a few minutes drew on his trousers. The constable turned his back for a moment and the next instant his prisoner had jumped out the second story window and was fleeing across the fields. Constable Strode followed in hot pursuit and suceeded in overtaking him after an exciting chase. The lad was then taken back to the house for the remainder of his attire, and while there begged his mother to forgive him. She stated that he had been tried and found wanting and to prison he should go. To prison he went. 9/22/1893 Alfred B. Speakman the son of Mrs. Melvina Speakman, who was arrested a few nights ago and lodged in prison on the charge of larceny preferred by his mother, was released from custody yesterday afternoon, Walter Lewis, of this borough, furnishing bail for the lad's appearance at the next term of Quater Sessions. The las is connected with quite a prominient family, and his relatives were quite indignant at the mother's action in having him sent to prison, as itis said it was entirely uncalled for. It is futher asserted that young Speakman has worked hard about the farm and was rarely given a cent for spending money. It is claimed that the sum he is charged with stealing only amounted to 60 centss, but the prosecution alleges he had stolen considerable sums on former occasions.
