All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Dan Lindley danoh19344@hotmail.com January 21, 2008, 8:51 am Downingtown Archive, August 11, 1955 James Hood, shipping department superintendent of the Downingtown Paper Co., died in the Coatesville Hospital an hour and a half after admission last Sunday morning after the car hew was driving struck a bridge abutment along the Creek Road, a half mile north of Downingtown. Hood became the 23rd person to die in an automobile accident in Chester County. Hospital authorities said that Hood died of a crushed chest and internal injuries after his sedan, in which he apparently was riding alone, crashed through a guard fence before striking the abutment. PINNED IN CAR The wrecked car with its driver pinned in was discovered by Charles Clark, a passing motorist. He rushed to a nearby house from where he summoned police and the Minquas Fire Co. ambulance which took Hood to the hospital. Deputy Chester County Coroner Thomas Montieth, who with State Police investigated the accident, issued a certificate of accidental death. Monteith said that there would be no inquest into the accident. Hood who lived at “Timbercrest” along Creek Road, north of town, had been employed by the paper company for more than 20 years. He was born in Texas, where his mother, Mrs. William A. Sanford, still resides. SURVIVORS He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hawes Hood, in addition to the following brothers and sisters: Morris Sanford and Mrs. Frank Needham, both of Carthage, Texas, Van Sanford, Laneville, Texas, and Paul with the U.S. Army. Funeral Services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the Archie McLean Funeral Home, Coatesville, followed by interment in the Hopewell Cemetery.
