In Los Angeles, Cal., yesterday, William H Lindley died at the age of about fifty-five years. He had been living in the West about four years, but was originally from Downingtown, and for a number of years lived in West Chester. While a resident of this borough he held a clerical position in the Broad Street Station, Philadelphia, but his health gave out and he went West in order to find a more genial climate. After making one or two trips across the continent, he decided to remain on the Pacific Coast, and settled in Los Angeles, being one of a number of Chester countians living in that city. Frequently he wrote letters to the residents here, and many of them were printed in the Daily Local News, giving accounts of places he saw and people he met. It was his delight to speak about the attractive features of the Pacific Coast, and when tourists from here would drop into Los Angeles, he took great pleasure in showing them the beauties of the neighborhood. Two Summers ago he and Mrs. Lindley spent a few months here, but returned in the Autumn, after disposing of their home and its contents on South high street. He is remembered as a man of most affectionate disposition, always cheerful and kind and doing his duty as he saw it to the best of his ability. As a commuter on the trains between here and Philadelphia he was a general favorite, going out via Media every morning with Conductor Milton M. Shaw, now retired, and returning usually by the Main Line. He belonged to West Chester lodge, No. 323, Free and Accepted Masons; Howell Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; the Methodist Episcopal Church and other organizations. He was a warm friend of West Chester Pioneer Corps. No. 1, always calling on the members when here and when he was absent he sent them post cars at Christmas Time. He married Miss Emma Rambler, of this borough, who has been faithful to him in his declining health, being his constant companion in his journeys through the West and seconding him in welcoming guests from Pennsylvania. Here sister, Mrs. Ida Rambler Baldwin, widow of Herbert Baldwin, and a brother, Ed. Rambler, all are in California. Word of his death was received in a telegram to ex-Burgess Plummer E. Jefferis yesterday, and while no statement was made regarding disposal of his body, it is supposed it will be brought East and interred beside that of his parents at Downingtown. His father, the late Downing Lindley, was long a respected resident of Downingtown and his mother was a Miss Wilson, a native of South Carolina and a sister of a former Chief Engineer Wilson, of the Pennsylvania Railroad. A sister married J. Hunter Wills, of Downingtown, who is now in Florida, and she died some years ago. Another sister, Miss Sara Lindley, is living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. To-day a second telegram arrived for Mr. Jefferis saying the body of Mr. Lindley would be placed in a vault in Los Angeles for the present. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19 Sep 1917 Some months ago, Wm.
