He was born near Oxford, Chester County, Penn., April 13, 1824. During the Civil War he enlisted as a volunteer. While the deceased was at the front, the mother and wife nobly endeavored to manage the farm and support the children. To add to her sorrows while the father was fighting for his country, it pleased Providence to take two of her children by death. On April 18, 1883 he came to Hand Co., Dakota Territory, where he resided until his death. He was interred at Burdette Cemetery on Sunday, Dec. 3. A large company of neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last respects to the aged veteran. NOTE: the obituary in The Miller Press appeared on the 100th anniversary of Mr. MacDonald's death in 1911.
