MOSTELLER PRESIDENT OF THE WEST CHESTER DEPARTMET STORE, WHICH BEARS HIS NAME, WHO, DIED THIS MORNING AFTER A PROLONGED ILLNESS. James Brownback Mosteller, the president of Mosteller's, Inc., West Chester Department Store, died at 9:15 this morning at his home, 334 W. Union Street. His death was sudden. He had been in poor health for several months, but was able to be around and had just finished breakfast when he was stricken. Mr. Mosteller would have been 85 years of age on August 9. He had been in business on N. Church Street, in West Chester since 1920, when he took over the old Moses and Lumis Clothing Store. The store expanded throughout the years and now occupies nearly one half - block, with entrances on Church and Gay Streets. Born in Chester Springs, the deceased was educated at Chestnut Grove School and Ursinus College. After leaving college he operated a farm between Kimberton and Birchrunville for many years. At one time he was Postmaster of Birchrunville and operated a general store there. He also operated a fruit and produce market in Phoenixville. He was a member of St. Matthew's Reformed Church, near Kimberton, and served it in an official capacity. He was also an associate member of the West Chester Methodist Church. Active in Civic affairs he was a member of the West Chester Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was a past master of Kimberton Grange and was active as a granger for many years. He was president of the Greenmount Cemetery Association. His death with the store at the time peak of its pre-Easter business made an immediate closing impossible. It will be closed, his sons, associated with him in the business, said on Saturday and Monday. Tonight it will remain open until closing time. In order not to disappoint customers, reserved Easter clothing may be obtained Saturday until 4:30 in the afternoon at the Church Street entrance. Surviving Mr. Mosteller are his wife, the former Rosalind Dewees and three sons, J. Dewees, a West Chester Councilman; Clinton R., and J. Paul. A daughter, Sara S., died in 1927. Three grandchildren also survive. Mosteller – On Friday April 2, 1953, James B., husband of Rosalind D. Mosteller, in his 65th year. Relatives and friends of the family and any organization of which he was a member are invited to attend the funeral from his late residence; 334 West Union Street, West Chester, Pa., on Monday, April 6, at 2 p.m. Interment Greenmount Cemetery.
