Sharpe At 12 o’clock last night, Bayard H. Sharpe a native of west Chester died at his home near Haddock, GA, where he had been making his winter quarters for the past seven years, and had been managing the farm of George A. Stallings. Had he lived until the 6th day of August he would have been 35 years old. For the past six weeks he had been ill from tuberculosis. Mrs. Sharpe, his wife, who had been his faithful attendant during his illness, left early this morning for West Chester, bringing his body north. She is Bertha, eldest daughter of councilman and Mrs. John Thorp of this borough. The have no children. Mr. Sharpe was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Howard Sharpe and was the last surviving member of hi s family. He was in his chosen line one of the most successful young men who ever went out of West Chester and had he been able to retain his health, would doubtless have become a manager equal to the best in America. He received his early education in the public schools here. Being graduated with honor from the west Chester high school and then going thence to state college where he finished the course credibly in 1903 qualifying for work as an electrical engineer. For a year he taught at Bellefonte Academy and for a time he worked as a specialist at the Sharpless Separator Works. His calling, however, was to the baseball diamond, where cheers accompanied him at every appearance. He played first on the junior teams about town. Then on the High school team, and the Brandywine team, and he state college teams. All the boys wanted him because they felt he was likely to bring victory to their colors. He was called to the Newark team and to the Boston, making splendid records on each. His position being first base. High tide was reached when he became manager of the team at Oaklands, California, and that season he was idolized by the fans, because he won for Oakland the pennant of the Pacific Coast League. Soon after this his health began failing and he retired from professional sports. As he had been spending his winters on the farm of Mr. Stallings, Manger of the Boston Braves, he made it his home all the year and continued with the management of the property. There he received visitors from many parts of the country who consulted with him on baseball and other matters for he had friends from coast to coast. On his occasional visits North he was welcomed as a hero and admired because of the laurels he had won. Mr. Sharpe belonged to the choir in the church of the holy trinity West Chester for a number of years his service being continuous for the reason that while his voice was changing he was not yet able to sing well. And so he did not lose his association with the vocalist. He was also a member of the West Chester Lodge No 322, Free and Accepted Masons, West Chester Lodge NO 858 B.F.O. Elks and the Provident burial Society. In disposition he was one of the most modest men and in his home life was a most agreeable companion and most fondly loved by those who knew him best. Researcher notes: The Sharpless Separating works was a plant that processed milk. The factory was one of the first in the nation and the equipment was patented. Jim Jones of West Chester University is expert on the manufacturing aspects of West Chester. Holy Trinity Church is an Episcopal Church still very active in West Chester. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- June 2, 1916 Sharpe- In Georgia on May 31st, 1916.
