John W. Smothers
After an illness of more than three months, John W. Smothers, from many years 
proprietor of the Magnolia House, Franklin and Miner Streets, died yesterday 
morning at four-thirty o’clock.  Mr. Smothers was born in Frederick, Md., and 
was in his 42d year.  He was prominent in secret societies, being a member of 
Harmon Lodge, No. 21 F&A.M., Past Grand Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of 
Masons of Pennsylvania, Very eminent Deputy Grand Commander of the Knights 
Templar, a member of the DeMolay Consistory, Grand Master-at-Arm of the Grand 
Lodge of Knights of Pythias of Pennsylvania, a member of Captain Levi. M. Hood 
Lodge, No. 159, Improved Benevolent Protective Order Elks of the World, and of 
the Friday Evening Club of Philadelphia.  He also managed the Diamond Rock 
Base Ball team.  He was a man of generous impulses, always ready to extend a 
helping hand to those who were in trouble or distress.  He leaves a wife, 
brother and sister who reside here.  His Funeral will take place Wednesday 
from Bethel A.M.E. Church, of which he was a member.  Interment will be at 
Longwood Cemetery.

SMOTHERS- on the 23d inst., John W. Smothers, in his 43d year.  Relatives and 
friends, also Harmony Lodge, F&A.M.; Jerusalem Commandery, No. 10, K.T., of 
West Chester; Mystic Shrine of North and South America, Knights of Pythias, 
Captain Levi M. Hood IBPO Elks of the World, are invited to attend the funeral 
at Bethel A.M.E. Church on Wednesday, the 26th, inst.  Services at 10 
o’clock.  Interment at Longwood Cemetery.
