Speakman a correspondent writes: On Saturday Septemer 8th one of the largest funerals ever to be held in Chatham or the surronding neighborhood was that of Caleb C. Speakman, who died at his home in that village on Tuesday, september 4, after an illness of only two days from heart troubles, in the 85th year of his age. Several years ago he suffered a like attack from which he apparently recovered and was able to resume his usual vocation, therefor his death was a great shock to the community, many friends not knowing of his illness until being informed of his death. Mr. Speakman was born at the old Speakman homestead, about one mile north of Chatham, on December 23d,1832 and practically all his long and useful life was spent in that neighborhood, and altough he lived far beyond the three score and ten he never seemed togrow old, and as many expressed it, he was eighty five years young. He was ever of a bright and cheerful disposition, always ready to lend a hand or perform a kindly deed, being very active, the charm of youth seemed to cling to his personality to the last. He was strictly of temperate habits and an ardent supporter of the Prohibition movement , and for over a period of seventy years was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and during that time he held various offices in the church and Sunday School. As Sunday School Superintendent for many years he greatly endeared himself to all and particularly to the chlidren, he being very fond of them and they in turned loved him dearly. It was the writer`s good fortune to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, and to his friends the soul of friendship. But the greatest of all, he was a man. He belived that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellow men, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness, is following in the footsteps of his Master, and so while we mourn the loss of our dead we rejoice that there is no cloud so dark that there is no light behind it: no sorrow so poginant that there is not a balm for the wound it inflicts. "Well done, good and faithful servant: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." He is survived by his with Letitia A. Speakman, and one daughter Miss Lydia R., nurse at Mt Hermon Mass. his pastor Rev. Thomas R. Crooks, assisted by two former pastors Rev. Henry G. Main, of Strasburg, Rev. Thomas S. Minker, of New London conducted very impressive services in the Chatham Methodist Church, which was crowded to the doors with relatives and friends that had gathered, notwithstanding the unfavorable weather, to pay their last respects to the memory of the venerable mand. Interment was made in the cemetery at Cochranville. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 4.2 Kb
