Her mother,Esther Darlington Roberts was one of a remarkable family of twlve, the oldest of whom was Judge Issac Darlington,and the youngest, William Darlington, both ditinguished memebers of Chester County Bar. Her father, James B. Roberts died when she was very young, and she lived in the family of her maternal uncle, Chandler Darlington, Kennett township. He was a man of progressive ideas,well informed and actively interested in the live questions of the day, and in this progressive and stimulating atmosphere , Eliza Roberts was raised, and imbibed its spirit. Bayard Taylor and Mary Agnew were among neighborhood friends and associates. She was educated at Kimberton School and taught public school in West Marlborough township for several years and also in the Unionville Acedemy. In Marlborough School, she introduced drawing and the studies of botany and physiology-innovations in the public curriculum of the early 40`s. One of her students is living at this time and recalls with pleasure these first lessons in the gentle science of botany and the enthusiastic tramps through the woods and fields under her guidance. In 1849 she married Wilson Speakman. Eliza Speakman met all the vicissitudes of a long andactive life with courage and fidelity principal. She was faithful and devoted as a wife and mother; a sweet womaly person, charitable and helpful, always readty to do her duty as a neighbor and friend, She is survived by her three children; Annie, wife of Herbert L. Speakman, of Monmouth Ill.,Mary, wife of Hugh S. Lupton, of Winchester, Va., and Esther Speakman residing at home. Speakman In West Chester, on the 24th of 11th-mo.,1905, Eliza R. widow of Wilson Speakman in the 85th year of her age. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services from her late residnce, No. 18 West Chestnut Street on Third day the 28th. To meet at the house at 11 a.m. 11/29/1905 The funeral of Eliza R. Speakman took place yesterday afternoon from her late residence, on West Chestnut Street. She was the widow of Wilson Speakman. The services were according to the Christian Scientists and interment was made in , the Friends` Buring ground on Rosedale avenue. Norman John of Wilmington, Del., and others spoke. The pall bearers were: Edmund D. Hoopes, Russell Hoopes, Charles Hoopes, Walter Hoopes,Henry Hoopes and Herbert P. Worth.
