Samuel Speakman aged 65 years, a retired business man, living at Harvey Station along the baltimore and Ohio Railroad, a short distance north of Wilmington, was struck by and instantly killed at the Claymont station on the Pennsylvania Railroad at 5:45 P.M. Monday by the south bound Colonial express, know as train No. 61. Mr. Speakman is survived by a widow and two sons, Charles C. and Frank L. and two daughters, Miss Helen and Miss Zillah., Frank L. Speakman, a son is former prothonotary of New Castle County. Mr. Speakman with his son Chas. had driven to the Claymont station with some fancy poultry to ship to West Chester for exhibition at the Chester County Fair. Mr. Speakman carried the crate to the station, passing over the tracks because the foot tunnel under the tracks was not large enough to permit the crate of chickens. He was returning when the accident occured. There is a fence separating the tracks in front of the station, and in the middle of this there is a gate. Mr. Speakman had passed through the gate and was lamost on the other side when some one on the north bound platform called to him to closet he gate. He turned and did as he was requested. He was about to start across the tracks. he failed to see or hea the express train approaching and just as he reached the middle of the track the locomotive struck him. Death must have been instantanious. His son Charles, who was waiting with the carriage for his father`s return, when he learned of the victim`s identity was almost prostrated with grief. The express train does not stop at Claymont and was going at a high rate of speed as it passed the station. Mr. speakman was a brother of John and Cloud N. Speakman, of this place, and was born in East Fallowfield Township,about 65 years ago. He was married about 40 years ago to Miss Anna Ashbridge and for several years conducted a partnership business with his brother Ellis, under the firm names of Speakman & Brother, the vook and stationary store now run by C.N. Speakman & Son, the senior member of which purchased his interest some thirty - eight years ago. Samuel afterwards was in business in West Chesster for a short itme, but for thirty five years has been in Wilmington. He was in the furniture business for a long time and had a store in West Fourth Street between Orange and Tatnall Streets. He retired from the business several years ago aand purchased a farm at Harvey station, and has since lived there.
