Professor Sweney was one of the most widely known religious songwriters in the United States and was looked upon as the chief hymn composer of America. He wrote scores of popular productions and was like wise a magnetic leader, his greatest works being as choraiter of the Bethany Sunday School, Philadelphia and at the Ocean Grove camp meetings. Denton Journal Denton Maryland April 15 1899 Professor John R Sweney, the well-known musician and hymn-writer died at Chester, Pa, Monday afternoon after an illness of several weeks. Prof Sweney was well and favorably known on the Peninsula especially in Delaware. He was the author of many pieces of music. One of his most popular compositions is Beulah Land.
