(Special to Intelligencer) Coatesville, October 3. — Failing to recover from an attack of acute ap- pendicitis followiné an operation in the Coatesville Hospital, William Tre- gay. Republican nominee for the office of District Attorney at the recent Pri- mary election, died yesterday at 6:30 Stricken til for the first time late Friday night, the well known attorney was removed to the local institution where his condition was at once recog- ntzed as critical. Dr. James Kennedy, Philadelphia specialist. was rushed here and an operation performed Sat- urday morning. Hanging between life and death. Tregay appeared to be constantly growing weaker. Despite his condition. though. he waged a brave battle a- gainsk a virulent form of infection which complicated his case. As the man who would have become District Attorney suffered. the entire city maintained a silent death-watch. Interest in his condition became so great. as his illness became more wide- ly known, that the local hospital was obliged to issue hourly bulletins. Suffering a relapse late yesterday afternoon. Tregay was In a semi-con- scious condition when his wife was summoned to his bedside. Death ar- rived with a heart attack at six-thirty. Wfth the entire city cloaked in mourning for the well known attorney who oplY two weeks ago received the Republican nomination with one of the largest majorities of the election. fitting funeral services were being planned. "The entire county mourns the death Of Mr. Tregay," Mayor Albert H. Swing declared today. "He had made many sacrifices to take the position of Dis- trict Attorney and was planning many things for the county. He was always upright. honest and one of the most admired members of the Chester Coun- ty Bar." Fifty years of age, Mr. Tregay prac- ticed law • in this county for more than the past fifteen years. Reaching the peak of his success in recent years, he has had more cases listed for court than anv cyher member. The October term of Court which opens at West Chester today is Virtu- ally crammed With cases which will necessarily be postponed on account of his death. Special services will be conducted by members of the Washington Fire Com- pany. of this city, of which Mr. Tre- gay was a trustee. Plans for this ser- vice will be made today. Resolutions will also be passed by the Chester County Bar Association which will probably gather today.
