He was a stone mason, but when his country called for his service to defend the Union, he laid aside his hammer and trowel, and at great pecuniary loss, for the wages of mechanics were high in those days, he, then a man well advanced in years, enlisted in Co. B, 1st Calvary, 44th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was mustered in August 6, 1861 and was discharged by order of the Company's surgeon April 14, 1863, after having served nearly two years. Those who served with Mr. Vanderslice testify as to his bravery and effeciency as a soldier, and nothing delighted him more in his old age than to recount some of the scenes of the war with which he was familiar, and he was a most interesting narrator, as he was possessed with a remarkable memory, and this was particularly so during the last years of his life. Mt. Vanderslice was for many years a conspicuous and familiar figure about town. He was tall, gaunt, and possessed something of a commanding air, which could become quite noticeable when his indignation was aroused. One by one these brave old men are past passing away, and ere long there will be but few of them to tell of the bloody days of the Civil War. When they have been laid to rest, history and tradition will have to be depended on to tell the history of the Civil War. Seven men bearing the name of Vanderslice enlisted for service in the Civil War, their names being John A. Vanderslice, Jonas Vanderslice, Nicholas Vanderslice, Samuel L. Vanderslice, William T. Vanderslice, John M. Vanderslice, John V. Vanderslice. They all enlisted from Phoenixville or vicinity. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
