The following is a copy of the Administrator's Bond filed in the Estate of
Mary Dehaven, a photocopy of which was obtained from the Chester County
Archives and Record Services in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  Talk about
legalese! Most of it was a pre-printed form with blanks to be filled in for
names and dates.

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, THAT WE Samuel Dehaven, William Crossan, &
James Kennedy are held and bound unto the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in
the sum of three hundred and sixty ---- Dollars to be paid to the said
commonwealth to the which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind
ourselves jointly and severally, for and in the whole, our Heirs, Executors
and Administrators, firmly by these presents.

Sealed with our Seals, dated the twenty-second day of September in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight.

The Conditions of this Obligation is such, That if the above bounden Samuel
Dehaven -------------- Administrator of all and singular, the goods,
chattels, and credits of Mary Dehaven ---- late of the township of London
Britain in said county, deceased, do make or cause to be made, a true and
perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits, of
the said deceased, which have come or shall come to the hands, possession,
or knowledge of the said Samuel Dehaven

or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons for him and
the same so made, do exhibit or cause to be exhibited into the Register's
Office in the county of Chester, within thirty days of the date hereof, and
the same goods, chattels, and credits, and all other the goods, chattels,
and credits of the said deceased at the time of her death, which at any
time after, shall come to the hands or possession of the said Samuel Dehaven

or into the hands or possession of any person or persons for him do well
and truly administer according to law.  And further do make and or cause to
be made, a true and just account of his said administration, within one
year from the date hereof, or when thereunto legally required, and all the
rest and residue of the said goods, chattels, and credits which shall be found
remaining upon the said Administrator's account, (the same being first
examined and allowed by the Orphans' Court of the county having
jurisdiction) shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons as the said
Orphans' Court by their decree or sentence, pursuant to law, shall limit
and appoint, and shall well and truly comply with the laws of this
commonwealth relating to collateral inheritances.  And if it shall
hereafter appear, that any Last Will and Testament was made by the said
deceased, and the same shall be proved according to law, if the said Samuel
Dehaven being thereunto required, do surrender the said Letters of
Administration into the Register's Office aforesaid, then this Obligation
to be void, otherwise to remain in full force.

Apparently the belongings of Mary Dehaven were sold at auction, as there's
a list of "bids" taken for various items, and the name of the person who
got each item.  Among the names of the persons who placed bids were:

"Jas. Kennady" for "flour cash," "dung fork," "Wood saw" "half hogshead"
"Jesse Dehaven"
"Lydia Chambers" for "Knife box & rake" and "table"
"Daniel Pluck"
"Edward Rumford"
"Wm. Smith" for "straw bed" "brass hand irons" "2 pitchers", "set of teaware"
"Joseph Dehaven" "2 candlesticks"

Total value of goods and chattels:  $468.43

It's interesting to note that in this record of purchases made from Mary
DeHaven's estate, James Kennedy's surname was spelled several times with an
"a" instead of a final "e" at the end before the "dy."
