Christian Myers, formerly a well known citizen of Clarion county, died at his home in Philadelphia, on Saturday last, in the 81st year of his age. Mr. Myers was born in Lancaster county, in 1796, and in 1828 came to Venango county. Here he built the second blast furnace west of the Allegheny mountains. The Philadelphia Times says: "His ability soon brought him into prominence and he early became one of the leading men of Western Pennsylvania. In 1837 he was elected to the Constitutional Convention and served with some distinction in that body of unusually able men. In 1840 he aided in the organization of Clarion county from portions of the territory of Armstrong and Venango, and was appointed by Governor Porter, one its firs Associate Judges. He was a Presidential elector on the Polk and Dallas ticket in 1843, but id not approve of the tariff of 1843 by the casting vote of Dallas, which he considered a violation of the party ledges. On a platform of opposition to this repeal he was elected to the State Senate in 1849 on an independent ticket; the district was composed of Armstrong, Clarion and Indiana. For six years, by appointment of Governor Curtin, Mr. Myers held the position of head of the Board of Grain Measurers of the Port of Philadelphia, and was always a firm supporter of the Governor. He has taken no part in politics of late years in consequence of his advance age. Mr. Myers always had the reputation, well earned, of being an honest and competent public servant, and in all relations a man of strict integrity and unsullied honor."
