Shaffer, 48, Pennsylvania Railroad brakeman, is believed dead in the wreck of 25 cars derailed at Protection, N.Y., 35 miles south of Buffalo. The accident occurred early this morning. He was on one of the box cars, other trainmen said, when the crash came. The train was about to descend a steep grade and the retaining valves had been shut. Produce and coal were strewn over a wide area. Passenger trains were rerouted. Shaffer, whose home was on Hoffman Ave., Oil City, leaves a wife and four children.
