The Southern general placed the city under a short siege, then retired when Union reinforcements neared. Burnsides men followed Longstreet toward Virginia, then went into winter quarters at Blaines Crossroads. Here, the major­ity of the 51st reenlisted as veteran volunteers and went home on furlough. Nov 4 Company drills and dress parade. All the carpenters detailed from the regiment re­ported to Lt.Col. [Orville E.] Babcock, assistant inspector- general, 9.A.C. at the old saw-mill of Mr. Lenoir's, near the railroad station, to work on pontoon boats. A heavy detail from all the regiments was sent to dig away the embankment near the mouth of the Little Tenn. River for the pontoon bridge, and a road to reach it. Nov 5 Company drills and dress parade, but a very few men to attend them. All the recruit­ing parties sent out by the 9.A.C. in East Tenn. is by S.O. No. 172, broken up, and officers in command are ordered to close up their business and report to their respective regiments. Nov 6 Company drills and dress parade. Srgt. Um. B. Hart, one corporal and seven men, ordered to report to Capt. Blanchard, Provost Marshal. In accordance with S.O. No. 173 9.A.C. and G.O. No. 173 War Department, the following named enlisted men of the 51st Penna. Vols. are hereby transferred to the Invalid Corps and their names will be dropped from the rolls of the regiment: Prv.
