ELMER CALHOUN The family of Mrs. Mary Ann, widow of A. Elmer Calhoun, were inexpressibly shocked at her sudden death on Tuesday afternoon, September 12, which was entirely unexpected. Mrs. Calhoun, who made her home for the past year with her daughter, Mrs. Ivan Anderson, 564 Broad street, had not been in good health for months but was most tenderly cared for by her daughter and seemed no worse than usual. After her rest period on Tuesday Mrs. Anderson went to her and was assisting her to rise when she suddenly expired. Mary Ann Schugars, daughter of Franklin and Matilda Best Schugars was born at Hormtown, June 4, 1869. She was united in marriage with Elmer Calhoun, of Brockway R.D. 1, March 5, 1888, and they settled in the Sugar Hill section where they operated a prosperous farm, lived a happy and contented life, and reared a family of five sons and four daughters and were among the best neighbors and kindest of friends in that community which is famous for its neighborliness. Mrs. Calhoun was a fine type of Christian womanhood, a devoted wife and mother, a wonderful neighbor and a devoted Christian. Her home and her church were her main interests, but no person ever called upon her for help in time of need but she responded with all she had that was needed. The latchstring was always out on her door and all who came received a hearty welcome and left with the assurance that they were always welcome. She was a woman of convictions and once she was convinced that a thing was right, she could not be moved. She was always ready to defend against unjust criticism and would not permit it in her home. She set a high standard for her family and lived it before them. She was possessed of a sweet disposition, patient and kind, equal to any task before her, with a saving sense of humor which made her a charming companion. Mother will never be dead to her children. She will ever live in their memories and they will "rise up and call her blessed." Her passing was as she would have had it. She lived quietly and fully, she entered into her rest quietly and happily. Mrs. Calhoun was the mother of 10 children, five boys and five girls, all of whom survive her except one little daughter, who died in infancy. Surviving are Walter, Charles, Harry, (Martha) Mrs. C. M. Carlson, (Olive) Mrs. Ivan Anderson, all of Brockway; Arden, of Brockway R.D. No. 1, (Edna) Mrs. Don Wingard, Lewis Run; Howard Calhoun, Canton, O.; (Mary) Mrs. Lowell Webster, of Bradford. One sister, Mrs. Delva Mateer, Ashland, O., and two brothers, Will Schugars, Reynoldsville, and Harry Schugars, Tarentum; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Deceased was a member of the Sugar Hill Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at the Ivan Anderson home on Friday, September 15, at 2 o'clock p.m. Rev. Tait will officiate, assisted by Rev. T.H. Johnson, of the Methodist Church, and interment will be made in the family plot in Beechwoods beside her husband, who passed on only six months ago. Her life is a beautiful memory, Her death is a silent grief. She sleeps in God's beautiful garden In sunshine of perfect peace.
