All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/clearfield/ ________________________________________________ THE PROGRESS, Clearfield, PA, October 30, 1952 7-Year-Old Boy Killed By Car Here William Carter Darts In Front of Car At Paradise School A seven-year-old Lawrence Township schoolboy was struck and fatally injured yesterday as he darted across the road in front of the Paradise School to return to afternoon classes. William Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fre4d Carter of Clearfield R. D. 1 died in the Clearfield Hospital a few minutes after he was admitted. Death was due to a fractured neck. State Police PFC Albert C. Scheib said the driver of the car which struck the youngster was George Byron Nichols, 62, of ( and 11 Holt street Westfield, N.Y. Dr. R. L. Williams of Houtzdale, Clearfield county coroner, said the accident would be classified as unavoidable and no inquest would be held. PFC Scheib said Mr. Carter, the boy's father, and Mr. Nichols gave this account of the tragic accident. Mr. Carter had driven the youngster to school and had parked on the opposite side of the Penfield-Rockton road from the Paradise elementary school. The boy got out of the right side of the car darted around the back of the automobile and onto the highway, directly in the path of the Nichols automobile, which was travelling north from Clearfield. The accident occurred at 12:50 p.m. Rushed to the hospital, the youngster died in the dressing station of the hospital at 1 p.m. Mr. Nichols was absolved of blame by the police coroner and Mr. Carter. William (Billy) Douglas Carter was born October 20, 1945 and was the son of Frederick W. and Mabel Ralston Carter of Flegal Road, Paradise. He is survived by his parents and these brothers and sisters: Beverly of Detroit, Mich., and Eugene, Janet, Sally, Wendell and Mary K., all at home. He also leaves these grandparents: Mrs. Mae Houser and Mrs. Lulu Carter, Clearfield, and Earl Carter, Rock Island, Ill. Funerals services will be held from the home of his parents in Paradise Saturday at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. Ralph Hinkelman of the West Side Methodist Church. Interment will be in Center cemetery. Friends may call at the home after 8 o'clock tonight, Friday afternoon and evening and until time of services Saturday.
