M. shabodeho@aol.com November 28, 2009, 8:53 pm The Clearfield progress on 1/29/1925 Richard Cook Richard Cook, one of Clearfield's hardest working and successful businessman, passed away at his apartments on the second floor of his building on market street at 4:30 o'clock this morning of pneumonia, following a complication of diseases and an illness of a couple of months. Richard Cook was an Englishman, coming to this country from Britain, and locating at Lewistown, Pa., when a young man. About forty years ago, he was united in marriage with Jennie Basford at Lewistown. Shortly after their marriage, the young couple located at Houtzdale this county, where the deceased opened a shoemaking shop. In the spring of 1892, the Cooks came to Clearfield, Mr. Cook opening a shoe shop in the Staver Building on Third street. Shortly thereafter, he enlarged his business by adding a line of groceries and as that end of the business began to grow, he turned his attention to it exclusively. Some time later, he moved into larger quarters in the Chase building on Third street, then to the Hardware room on Ma(unreadable) and again into the Woolridge building. In 1922, he purchased his present location, and converted the building into a modern storeroom with residence flats on the upper floor. Dick Cook was of a peculiar makeup, strong in his likes and dislikes. He was not a hypocrite and had the courage of his convictions at all times. A careful, conservative businessman, he was honest as the day was long and by hint of excessive energy and the hardest kind of hard work made more than the ordinary financial success of his business. He is survived by his widow, four children born to their union, having preceded their father to the grave. Funeral notice tomorrow.
