It seems that he was leaning on the muzzle of a combined rifle and shotgun and kicking his feet around to keep them warm and in some manner struck the hammers of the gun exploding both barrels, the contents of which entered the side of his face and neck making a horrible wound and killing him instantly. Mr. Gifford was an employee of the Penfield Coal Company, a good worker and well liked by his employers and fellow workmen. The remains were taken to DuBois for interment.
