(PA.) Wed. 5 March 1873 issue. LINGLE - We learn that on Thursday, February 6th, Mr. James Lingle, Goshen township, at Shawville, met three or four men who had been drinking and they tried to persuade him to take some liquor, which he refused to do whereupon they undertook to force him to drink. Mr. Lingle resisted their efforts, and in doing so, he knocked one down, when a second one of the party, a man named Wallace struck him a slight blow on the mouth. Thus ended the affray, and all parties went to their homes, without having sustained any serious damage. A day or two after the occurance above related, Mr. Lingle's lip and face became inflamed, erysipelis ensued, and continued to get worse until Saturday, the 15th, when he died from the effects. Such, we are informed, are the facts in the case. This is certainly one of the most singular fatal occurances that it has ever befallen our lot to record. Mr. Lingle was a large, robust, healthy person, and hence it seems exceeding strange that so slight an injury should end his life. But the way of providence are beyond the comprehension of man, and this instance again illustrates the fact "that in the midst of life we are in death". Clearfield Journal Wed. 5 March 1873 issue.
