(Clearfield, Pa.): March 11, 1857 At Grahamton, on Thursday the 5th inst., of Scarlet fever, Martha Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel S. and Mary Q. McEwen, aged 9 years and 23 days. Poor little Martha is gone. No more will we hear her sweet voice on this earth, nor see her skip over the play grounds with her little sisters and schoolmates. She has gone to dwell in the arms of Him who has said, "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." During her brief illness her sufferings were intense; but she is now free from suffering and pain, and dwells where pain and sorrow never more can reach her. It was hard to part with her yes, it was hard to part with poor little Martha but it was the will of the Lord, and we submit. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away blessed be the name of the Lord. A mourning class, a vacant seat, Tell us that one we loved to meet. Will join our youthful throng no more, Till all these changing scenes are o'er. No more that voice we loved to hear, Shall fill her teacher's listening ear; No more its tones shall join to swell The songs that of a Saviour tell. That welcome face, that sparkling eye, And sprightly form, must buried lie Deep in the cold and silent gloom.-The rayless night that fills the tomb.
