Mine Accident Kills Osceolan Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning for George J. Mekis, 50, of Spike Island, Osceola Mills, RD, a cutting machine operator who was killed at a coal mining operation near Glen Ritchey on Thursday morning. The victim was caught by his machine and pushed against the wall of the underground operation. He was pronounced dead when brought to the surface. State Mine Inspector Perry B. Gaddis of Clearfield, and county coroner Ralph M. Geer, conducted their investigations at the scene. He had been employed by the Bradford Coal Co. for about eight years and was working in the firm's Graham mine at the time of the accident. Born in Houtzdale on March 29, 1914, he was the son of Michael and Anna Hadada Mekis. He is survived by his wife, the former Nellie Yakobosky and these children: Specialist 4th Class George, Jr., Ft. McPherson, Ga.; Carol, Flint, Mich.; Frances, wife, of Thomas Merryman, Philipsburg; Eileen and John at home. Brothers and sisters surviving: Mrs. George Karsnak and Joseph Mekis of McKeesport; Mrs. Andrew Bezilla, Houtzdale; Stephen M., Johnstown; John, Central City; and Mrs. Joseph Lawskosky, Coupon. Rites will be conducted from the Heath Funeral Home by Rev. Stephen Katarzynski at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
